4K Ultra HD
Even though 4K Video distribution has increased over the years additional considerations regarding playback and viewing are still needed in some situations. For example some Media Players and devices may not be compatible with 4K resolutions and therefore will not play the file properly or not at all. It is not necessary for you to create 4K HD to sell on ArtAvant.
1080p
1080p Video is the most common form of HD Video today. 1080p HD video is great and when 1080p files are viewed on 4K HD devices, the devices will often upscale the video for beautiful playback on the screen.
Up-Scaled1080p
In addition to originated 1080p HD, ArtAvant also provides selling opportunity for Standard Definition video that has been up-scaled to 1080p High Definition. This is so that the Video Art trail blazers and pioneers of the past, who were the early initiators and participants of the Video Art form can have a place amongst contemporaries to market their Works from a time when Standard Definition was the Only Definition available for video producers and audiences alike.
We make it clear that the Works being presented are up-scaled productions so that consumers know what they are looking at while shopping. At ArtAvant we’re happy to show some love to any of the re-vamped classics that make their way to our platform for the viewing and buying pleasure of today’s audiences.
1080p and/or 4K Ultra HD
You can sell Works in both 1080p and 4K Ultra HD with either Horizontal or Vertical Screen orientations. You can publish your Works in one format and add another format of that Work to your Gallery at a later time if you like. The choice is yours and your options are flexible along the way. The objective is to provide you with the most accommodating arena for marketing your productions, satisfying the Video Art consumer and increasing your sales.
A codec is a hardware or software-based process that compresses and decompresses large amounts of data. Codecs compress or shrink (encode) media files such as video, audio and still images in order to save device space and to efficiently send those files over a network such as the Internet. There are hundreds of different codecs designed to encode different mediums. The encoded media file is wrapped in a file container compatible with the codec, used in the encoding process. The encoded file is then ready for delivery and use.
The H264 codec and the MP4 container are two of the most popular codec and container combinations for video encoding and are universally compatible with contemporary media applications.
Video Art Works sold on ArtAvant are files encoded using the H264 codec within an MP4 container (H264/MP4) providing the largest potential for purchase and used by consumers interested in Video Art Entertainment.
Files of your Video Art Works submitted for sell on ArtAvant need to be H264 encoded files with an MP4 extension. The specific encoding parameters you apply will differ for each Work according to the ArtAvant encoding specifications provided for each Video Format. Encoding guidance is defined in the “Encodes” section below and within the Submission form, located in the Artist Dashboard, used for submitting your Works for sell.
Video Codec:
Video Art Works submitted for sell on ArtAvant need to be H264 encoded files with an MP4 file extension (H264/MP4 files).
Video Frame Rate:
When encoding your video for upload, it’s best to maintain the video’s native frame rate. We recommend using a constant frame rate when compressing your video. Always choose “constant” frame rate instead of “variable” frame rate in the encoder settings.
Example Accepted Frame Rates (Frames Per Second – fps):
- 23.98
- 24
- 25
- 29.97
- 30
- 50
- 59.94
- 60
Video Bit Rate:
Bit rate (also known as data rate) controls the visual quality of the video and the majority of it’s file size. If your video editing software gives you the option, choose a “variable” bit rate and select a value from the ranges below according to the video standard you are creating. You can experiment with different rates if your file is too large or you’re not happy with the quality of your resulting file. The video bit rates below are combined with the accompanying audio bit rates for the total combined bit rate of the Video Art Work.
Video Standard |
Aspect Ratio |
Horizontal Resolution |
Vertical Resolution |
Bit Rate (Mbps) |
1080p Up-Scaled | 16:9 | 1920x1080 | 1080x1920 | 9.8 - 11.8 |
1080p | 16:9 | 1920x1080 | 1080x1920 | 9.8 - 11.8 |
4K Ultra HD | 16:9 | 3840x2160 | 2160x3840 | 13.8 - 15.8 |
Audio Codec:
The AAC audio codec needs to be used when encoding the H264/MP4 files submitted to ArtAvant
Audio Bit Rate:
Best to use audio bit rates ranging between 160kbps to 256kbps. The audio bit rate combines with the video bit rate to determine the overall bit rate of the Video Art Work submitted.
Audio Sample Rate:
Best to use audio sample rates of 44.1kHz & 48 kHz as your encoding applications permits.
Audio Channels:
Audio channels can be encoded as 2.0 Stereo L & R, 5.1 or 7.1 Surround Sound.

Due to file delivery and processing considerations of High Definition video, a key goal of High Definition Video encoding is to create the Highest Quality encodes using the lowest overall bit rates feasible. Doing so produces smaller files for faster downloading that require less storage space. Optimal encoding is an art form in itself. These encoding parameters are designed to produce great looking Video Art files efficiently and effectively without compromise to performance.
Video Art Files are sold and delivered at the quality and format as submitted.
Metadata is textual information that is contained within media files (and other digital files) and is displayable in media applications, media players and other media devices to provide identifiable aspects of media files that are useful in the processing, storing, playing and organizing of the files.
For example, the information and details you see when looking at a list of Video or Audio files in a playlist that you have created in a Media Library application such as iTunes or Windows Media Player is the metadata associated with the files in the list.
Regarding video files this information often consists of:
- Title of Work
- Artist
- Long Description
- Short Description
- Genre
- Rating
- Date
- Production Details
- Personnel
- Copyright
You can also see certain types of metadata when you right click on a file and select “properties” from the context menu.
Since metadata is information that is included within the construct of a media file it is a good practice to utilize this metadata and provide key information about your Video Art Work that can be beneficial to you and the buyer when your Work is being viewed. Some technical metadata such as file format, codec, aspect ratio, bit rate, frame rate and the name of the encoder is automatically applied when a files is being encoded. While useful, this automatic metadata does not speak to the narratives of your Work.
Some media encoders may have the ability to specify metadata information to files in addition to the technical data during the encoding process. Typically it will be necessary to apply the broader more narrative metadata to Works after they have been encoded for submission. This can be done easily using a Metadata Editor. Search online for “Metadata Editors” and you‘ll see a list of applications available for various Operating Systems. Select one that fits your production workflow best and have fun adding data to your data in a meta-meaningful way.
